About the Shapiro Center

Creative Writing and Criticism at Wesleyan University
Homed at Wesleyan University, the Center’s classes, events, projects, and internships teach students how the pursuit of knowledge and artistic practice can co-exist, both in the university and beyond it. We believe that, in order for creative writing and criticism to thrive, its practitioners must look both within the university and beyond it, to the many different publics they can serve. The Center’s classes and extra-curricular initiatives model how creative writing and criticism can reach readers of many different backgrounds—readers who can take pleasure in every possible form, genre, and medium, from literary criticism to children’s literature, from translated fiction to audiobooks.

The Critic and Her Publics
The New York Review
In a series of conversations with Merve Emre at Wesleyan University, some of today’s sharpest working critics discuss their careers and methodology, and are then asked to close-read a text that they haven’t seen before. The New York Review is collaborating with Lit Hub to publish transcripts and recordings of these interviews, which across eleven episodes will offer an extensive look into the process of criticism.
